The Programme

Pre-Registration Year
  • We support 3-4 Pre-registration students per year. You will be part of a group of pre-reg optometrists who will support each other and become good friends.
  • The Pre-reg year starts in August each year, to become qualified the following August.
  • You will be assigned a dedicated Supervisor to support your learning and development as you continue your training.
  • You will be provided with a structured training programme.
  • You will have the opportunity to participate in mock exams before your formal exams.
  • Ongoing support and training tailored to YOU.
Day as a Pre-Reg

On our pre-reg programme, you will learn how to dispense, work closely with our practice team and practice manager to understand the patient journey and be exposed to a wide variety of sight tests and contact lens patients.

Additionally, we will provide you with the opportunity to work closely with an experienced Optometrist, who will allow you to shadow, and provide you with supervision and support throughout your pre-reg. Importantly, D&T can provide you with generous testing times, and time at the end of your clinic to allow you to catch up with your supervisor and update your logbook.

At D&T, we understand that completing your pre-reg can be a stressful and demanding time, as such, we are committed to providing you with the best possible pre-reg experience, to allow you to progress successfully to a fully qualified Optometrist.

Summer School
  • For anyone who would like to get the experience working in a practice before starting their Pre-reg year, we provide a supported Summer programme for undergraduates and those finishing secondary school.
  • This entails a 4-6 week placement with dedicated training and can be completed in our practices across Scotland.
  • During your placement, you will learn how an optician's practice works day-to-day from greeting patients and managing the diary to observing eye exams, contact lens I&Rs and the dispensing of glasses.

Life After Pre-reg

Following your training, you will have a guaranteed permanent contract. We will agree on a location for your first-year post-qualifying based on vacancies at the time. We will then review after 12 months to relocate you to your preferred location, if different.

As a newly qualified Optom with D&T, you will be provided with continuous support from our Professional Services Team, our Practice Staff, and your Line Manager. As a company, D&T is passionate about supporting our Optometrist's continuous professional development, and we encourage all progression routes.
